The Cheese Murder
The Cheese Murder. A slightly amusing whodunit by Nick Willson.

This comedy whodunit tells the story of a group of twenty-somethings in the quaint English village of Larynx in December 1991. Whilst there are two hideous deaths, a murder investigation and uncomfortable moments, there is plenty of slapstick comedy from its many colourful, idiosyncratic characters.

The setting and era reminds us of how different life was before the advent of mobile phones and the internet.

------

In the weeks leading up to the snowy Christmas of 1991, villagers are putting up decorations and hanging lights around the church. But in the nearby pub relations between a group of beer-swilling twenty-somethings is becoming strained.

Ralph Parmesan, a young bus driver, will stop at nothing to realise his career ambitions. After a bizarre death at the bus depot he begins blackmailing the boss. His heavy drinking and aggressive nature puts his relationship with girlfriend Christine Ribcage in doubt. Then he is found dead. Killed by asphyxiation. By a lump of cheese. At first sight it seems like a hideous accident, choking on cheese in a drunken stupor.

In the nearby drab town of Sockwith, the detectives, led by DI Brian Fluids, set to work. His enthusiastic but far from competent team of young officers bungle their way through the investigation. Fluids, meanwhile, is distracted by his lust for the curvy constable Vivian Fledgling.

It's not long before the eccentric forensic detective Halibut unveils the cunning mechanics behind the murder. But the culprit's identity remains a mystery.

The murder squad's investigation unravels dark secrets. The jealousy and obsession of Christine's former lover, Leonard Mantlepiece. The violence of her previous lover, Pierre Le Pants, kept a secret from his treasured young wife. The hidden past of the Chief Executive of Sockwith Corporation Transport, Arbuthnot Clamp and his part in the Griswald's Pie Factory Scandal, and the snobbish world of Parmesan's estranged mother, Muriel Bleach-Parsley and her husband Major Plankton. Even Christine herself is under suspicion.

Journalists swarm the village, the Major's wig is propelled, Fluids and Fledgling get amorous, evidence is found to be contaminated, swans attack the police and suspects are dragged kicking and screaming into police interrogation, each proclaiming their innocence.

The story climaxes with an arrest that horrifies the village.
